Hello ,

The more I've worked with and spoken to educators, business leaders and practicing photographers around the country, the more I've realized the need for photographers to look beyond the camera and Photoshop to learn from, and be inspired by other creative disciplines.

Multimedia presents photographers with both a business opportunity and a creative platform you can use to expand your ideas, share your vision and diversify your offerings to clients.

Below are three great examples of news organizations blending video, text, audio and photography to tell deeper, more engaging stories than is possible with a still photograph. Right now, newspapers are pioneering the multimedia effort, however, these multimedia tools can be easily applied for advertising, architecture, product, nature, landscape, wedding and portrait photography.

As Peter Drucker, once wrote: "The best way to predict the future is to create it." In that spirit I'll be bringing you inspiring examples of photographers and organizations harnessing the power of the web to tell compelling stories and tutorials to help you create your future.

Photoshop, Camera Raw & Lightroom Updates
In November, Adobe released an important update to Photoshop CS3 that fixes the "Include XMP" bug outlined in the August issue of Professional Digital Workflow. With this update, selecting Include XMP when using Save For Web and Devices will preserve all the metadata contained within an image.

Adobe Camera Raw 4.3 and Lightroom 1.3 Updates add Camera Raw support for a number of new cameras including the Olympus E-3, Nikon D300 and Canon 1Ds Mark III.
All three updates can be accessed from the Updates link within the application or on the Adobe site.

UPDIG Version 3.0
The UPDIG working group has released the third version of the Universal Photographic Digital Image Guidelines (UPDIG) for content creators and content receivers. These best practices guidelines are endorsed by over twenty professional photography trade associations around the world including ASMP, PPA, APA and EP. The UPDIG guidelines can simplify the creation of an efficient workflow and facilitate the transfer of images between photographers and clients.

UPDIG Workflow Tutorials
The adoption of digital tools has made creating and delivering photos to clients easier. Unfortunately, it has also made other aspects more difficult and prone to error. Photographers are now delivering files to clients electronically with mixed success. The Universal Photographic Digital Imaging Guidelines is a series of best practices recommendations aimed at simplifying the process of managing, archiving, transmitting and sharing digital photographs between individuals, companies and organizations.

This  creates a more efficient, more effective workflow for both photographer and client. To help you incorporate the UPDIG guidelines into your workflow I've prepared a series of tutorials addressing the four key stages of every digital photography workflow:

1) Color Management

2) Importing & Downloads

3) File Correction & Preparation

4) File Delivery to Clients

One tutorial will be released per month, beginning with this month's tutorial on Color Management.

In the next issue, we'll have part two of the UPDIG workflow series with tips on streamlining the file import process. You'll learn ways to quickly add metatdata while downloading, strategies for creating a file naming structure and techniques for backing up a shoot in the field.

Until the, have a happy holiday season and I wish you the very best in the coming year!
